Transformation as with the Perspective tool without really putting in "perspective"

This discussion is connected to the gimp-user-list.gnome.org mailing list which is provided by the GIMP developers and not related to gimpusers.com.

This is a read-only list on gimpusers.com so this discussion thread is read-only, too.

Transformation as with the Perspective tool without really putting in "perspective"

Hi everyone,

I have been looking for a solution to this problem for a long time and never find anything. I guess it requires skills that I don't have.

I want to be able to transform a selection like with the Perspective tool without really putting it in "perspective", without "tilting" it. This is in order to transform a rectangular selection into a quadrilateral while maintaining the ratio.

I am a cartoonist, and I usually use the rule of thirds when composing my panels. For this, I transform a rectangle containing guides with the Scale tool. It's very fast and efficient for most of my panels. But, as you may know, comic book panels aren't always rectangular.

I unfortunately cannot use the Perspective tool because it causes me to lose the ratio. I can only recreate a grid with many layers and operations, but the task is long. I can't afford to do this for every panel when I have dozens, if not hundreds, to draw.

Through my research, I haven't discovered anything that solves my problem. Hope you will know how to do it.

Thank you in advance for your help,

Bonnet

Bit of a struggle. Starting with this: https://i.imgur.com/J0sxgYx.jpg

If you use gmic www.gmic.eu cartesian transform first. Play around with the scaling value: https://i.imgur.com/Z38HLkc.jpg

If you open images as layers, gmic can apply the same filter to all layers.

Then apply a transform to that: https://i.imgur.com/za7NxBD.jpg

This is not the best forum for questions, it is almost abandoned.

Try https://discuss.pixls.us/ where there are dedicated Gimp / gmic sections. Someone might provide a better 'recipe'

Transformation as with the Perspective tool without really putting in "perspective"

Hi rich404, thanks for your reply.

For information, I finally found a satisfactory solution to my problem. I only have one issue left: I have to use another software. You probably know it, it's Inkscape, a free and open-source vector graphics editor. There is a path effect called "Envelope Deformation" which works like the Perspective tool but without tilt.

I find it sad that there is no solution in GIMP because this tool seemed so logical to me for this software. Additionally, I have discovered through my research other people who have reported the same issue. Hope this inspires GIMP developers to add this tool in one of its future versions.
