I take pictures of CD covers with my cell phone. Basically, I remove the CD trays, remove the cardboard, make an attempt to straighten the folds out, and take a picture of it with my Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (Android user here). I realize that using a dedicated scanning device with a flatbed would be my best option, but I don't have access to this.

Once in awhile, I get sorta lucky, it'll have me scan the image and give me corner circles (to drag) to adjust the cropping. I finally got smart and started using the Your Phone app on my Windows 10 PC to mirror my phone onto my computer, so I could see the image better while cropping.

Due to the folds, though, it causes some of the artwork to be crooked, still. I need to be able to add stretching points to the JPG file. I imagine there's a way to do this on Gimp. How could I do this?

You might be able to use the unified transform tool directly but IMHO better to rebuild to a correct CD cover size.

It's just that when I take a picture where the angle of my phone really

shows the angle of my picture because of creases.

Not much you can do about any distortion caused by the paper booklet pages 'cockled' Try an get a smooth as possible.

If you are determined to use your phone camera and to be fair it is a 12 Mp camera, it gives a fair sized image, maybe invest in a mini tripod and clamp. I have seen cheap offers from 5 to 10 euro.

to include the folds on the left and right sides. There are folds on both

sides of the slip,

which is causing the problem. If it were flat, it would be smooth sailing.

It shows resizing the canvas to include the extra needed for the edge tabs. The Gimp xcf attached as an example of a template.

Remember, when you save as a Gimp xcf format all layers, guides, active selections, paths etc are included in the file.

This forum is almost abandoned, One or two users look in and post answers occasionally, only marginally better than reddit. There are other, more active Gimp forums.

or is there another way to do it? The 9 minute video doesn't totally cover

what I'm asking for.

I don't see the ends on the pictures

I really do not advise trying to edit the whole length of a 2 or 3 page booklet insert ie the quick-n-dirty way. You can not add intermediate points for the fold locations. The best way is still page by page. Takes a bit longer but worth it. All a matter of practice.

.....For the couple that I've done so far with it, I've just basically "eyeballed" getting the barcode straight after doing the Universal Transforming. That seems to do better. I probably should start taking pics in landscape mode based on the angle I take the pics, for better results.

I had a problem with one last night. I kept taking the picture and it kept appearing more brown, when the back is actually black. Also, it was clear where the light was hitting it the most. With my limited knowledge, I couldn't seem to figure out a solution. I normally take the pics with the backs on my desk. Sometimes I have a light facing them, others I don't. My desk is a lighter shade of brown, so I'm wondering if that has any sort of affect on the coloration. I could just try placing the items on a dark surface. What do you think?

To play around with, I recently bought a mobile phone clamp and a clip-on phone camera macro lens, both about 5 euro and surprisingly well made. Findings, the background colour does make a big difference to image colour, all you can do is experiment and it looks like distance to the object comes into play. Remember, this is a primarily a phone, not a camera.

I would still invest in a tripod, the ability to get everything squared up and avoid big transforms is a definite plus. FWIW pulled out an old cheap, much repaired mini-tripod, still available, about 7 -12 euro.

For those product photos you see on web pages, a light box to give all-round diffuse lighting is used. For a home set-up on a desk with light from one side, you could try a simple white paper reflector to even out the illumination. Better if you can find a spot where the light is even.
