Problem Downloading Brushes

I am fairly new to GIMP but I am having issues downloading and installing brushes that I cannot find an answer to resolve.

(Mac OS X user)

For some reason when I try to download new brushes they are not appearing as a recognised file type that I can then install into GIMP.

Prior to a recent OSX update the files were appearing as Exec files (which I understand means Windows only - cannot run on mac) and after updating to the most recent OSX they are only opening through Discover on the App Store. I've attached a screen grab of how the files appear after download in case my description is unhelpful.

Any advice appreciated!!
