I'm sure this is a very basic question, but I have an object on a checkered background (transperency?) but I can't get rid of the checkered background. Is there a simple way to do so?

Yes, the chequerboard indicates transparency. If you want transparency, then leave it. Otherwise: Layer|Transparency|Remove Alpha Channel

Sorry guys. I tried another object with a checkered background and when I put it on a layer over another image the background was automatically transparent--so it appears the first object that I posted about was not actually a transparent background. Sorry to bother you but glad I found this forum :)

Thanks Bob, I hadn't seen your reply when I posted again before. I've just noticed that the transparency object that is working for me is a png file, and the ones that won't work are jpegs... will that be the problem? I seem to recall (but I do have dodgy recall these days) that perhaps transparency doesn't convert with a jpeg file??

The chequer pattern is often used to denote transparency. Best leave as is in Gimp but if you want to change to something else, say white, then use Edit -> Preferences -> Display and under Transparency change the Check style.

Not all image formats support transparency, Save as a Gimp .xcf and keep transparency, Export as png, tif, psd, bmp keeps transparency.

Jpeg is a principally a photographic format. Does not need transparency. Any transparency in your image is replaced by the current background colour.
