I suggest entering QuickMask mode, then drawing (with the pencil tool and white color, using shift+click to draw lines from one point to the next, then floodfill tool to fill the polygons.)

Not sure I understand - is it like you want to cut off someone's nose with the straight line being where their nose used to be attached? I'd use the free hand (lasso) tool to select the part of the image you want - so you have a rough outline of the nose (plus some cheek), then select the rectangle select tool and hold CTRL (to subtract the selection) along the straight edge.

There is probably a better way to do this, but the above is my first guess at a way. Also, if you straight selection is not vertical or horizontal, I suppose you could rotate the image/layer first, then rotate it back.

Checking out paths is probably another option.

The right tool for this is the Paths tool - (the pen, just past the scissors ont he toolbox). It connects a curve with with straigh ines, as you go clicking, and when you close a curve segment (holding control and clicking back where you started), you can d o select->from path to get a selection.

This is what I do:

Use "Paths Tool" -> Check the option "Polygonal" -> Start clicking on your image. -> the last click can be as close as you can to the starting point or just leave the last straight line (the next step will close the loop for you)-> once you are done : click "Selection from Path"

This will automatically connect the end to the start point and select for you.

Once you see the selection, you should be able to select other tools for your own use.
