Warning message about 'gimp-metadata' parasite

I've begun getting this consistent warning in GIMP 2.10.8 on two different Windows 10 machines :

Corrupt 'gimp-metadata' parasite discovered. XMP data could not be migrated: Parsing XMP data failed.

I have no idea what this means or how it affects performance. Can anyone explain?

Warning message about 'gimp-metadata' parasite

I now see this from 2.10.12, when loading an .xcf file dated March 2018. The file would have been created with the-then-current GIMP. I am able to edit the file as expected and save as a new .xcf. The latter loads without the error.
