Is uninstall needed before update

Do I need to uninstall my old version of GIMP before installing a new version? I am going from 2.6 to 2.10 on a Windows 10 PC. I think in this case maybe not because 2.6 is 32 bit and 2.10 is (as I recall) 64 bit....But in general - for this or any update- should the old version be removed first? I looked all over the internet and user guides and could not find this very basic piece of info. Thanks - Bob-o-matic.

Short answer is no need to uninstall first but....

Gimp 2.10 will uninstall Gimp 2.8 as part of the process. If you have installed any 3rd-party plugins to the Gimp system folder, then not a bad idea to uninstall Gimp 2.8 first. Some of these 2.8 legacy plugins can cause problems. Uninstall Gimp 2.8 If any files remain in C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\ delete them.

My advice is use the customise option, save a bit of space by un-selecting languages. Add a short-cut to the desktop, which is useful.

What it does not do is delete the old Gimp 2.8 profile C:\Users\"yourname"\.gimp-2.8

It will migrate settings and resources from there to the new Gimp 2.10 profile which is;

C:\Users\"yourname"\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10 Note: a hidden folder in Windows 10

Again my advice, start with a clean install.

Before anything **rename** the old profile as a backup C:\Users\"yourname"\.bakup-gimp-2.8

Then, after running Gimp 2.10 for the first time, a new basic Gimp profile is made. Move any resources, scripts, plug-ins, brushes, fonts over from the backup, checking as you go that they work.
