Adding Plugin frustration

Is it / are they permissioned as executable and have you restarted gimp. ------Original Message------

I want to add the Resynth plugin package to my Ubuntu 12.10 Gimp 2.8. I've located and downloaded the plugin, extracted it, found two plugin folder paths that show in the Gimp Preferences Folders box, placed copies of the plugin files in each of those folders, but Resynth still does not show up in my Gimp 2.8.
What am I doing wrong?

This is a meta-package, available in Ubuntu's Graphics (universe) repository. Has lots of good stuff including the resynthesizer, automagically installed & ready to use.

Adding Plugin frustration

Just ran the command. What do I do next? Where should I look in Gimp for this plugin if it is installed and working properly? After running the command you show below, how do I take advantage of the plugin registry? Thanks to everyone for the replies.
I had all of this down pat several years ago, but my "remembery" seems void of the know-how these days. Caruso

Did you check if it shows up in the plugin browser ("Help/Plugin browser")?

Otherwise start Gimp from a terminal and check for suspicious messages on startup.

Try opening a random image. Make a selection, and go to Filters > Enhance > Heal Selection. If this menu entry is present, the GIMP Plugin Repository installation was successful, and includes the Resynthesizer plugin.

Actually, you're all done. The gimp-plugin-repository package installs many of the most popular and useful plugins from the Repository in one go.

Fire up Synaptic again, find gimp-plugin-repository, and read the full description of the package. This lists what it installed for you. The commands to use these thingies and dealie-bobs are in the GIMP's menus, usually in the places you would expect to find them.
