Downloading Images from Internet

I use Windows 10. Recently updated to GIMP 2.10.12. I search for an image online, then use right mouse click to get to "Save Image As" option. When I select this option, the window pops up for me to name the file, but the only "Save As Type" option I get is GIMP 2.10.12. I no longer see options of .jpg, .png, etc. I have no idea where the setting might be to change the option so I can save these files in other formats. I don't want every file to be saved for use in GIMP. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Image attached to show issue.

Was the Windows Installer installer gimp-2.10.12-setup-1.exe by any chance?

This latest and greatest has changed the way file associations are when Gimp is installed.

quote>>> associations code was rewritten when moving to IS6 to work properly on modern Windows versions (and to work with per-user installs). Instead of trying to make GIMP the default application for file types selected during setup, it now instead registers GIMP as being able to open all of the extensions it supports, which lets Windows manage the associations.

see: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/3546

Already seen a couple of WTF-is-going-on type posts, Guessing, yours is just another manifestation of the 2000-ish registry entries that now get installed.

No real advice (move over to using linux maybe). Make sure that the common file types jpg / jpeg / png / gif are set to use Gimp using the Windows file associations see: https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-change-file-associations-in-windows-2624477

Out of interest, what happens if you add the appropriate file extension to that xxxxxxxx file name?

Tried to change the extension, still came up as GIMP when I checked it in the file folder. I believe I found a workaround to the issue. I had already gone through the settings and tried to change at least .eps, .jpg, and .png files to only open with either photos or my .eps viewer. The workaround I found was to download the image, then instead of just opening the image, go to the folder where the image is located. From there, right click the image name and select Open With. There I could chose either the .eps viewer or the photos. I was also able to check the box to say to open files of this sort with that particular app from now on. Problem solved for now at least.

I hate this so bad, I think of dumping Gimp. I don't know what is responsible for this change, but I hate it. I have found that there *is* another choice under the GIMP files choice, it is All Files *.* and then you just type in .jpg after the pic you are downloading. If even tries to get my pdf files. :( So this does work, but just one more pain that windows 10 has created... now if I do that, and can only get it saved into the file of MY choice (which I have my preferences set to) before it blinks and sends it off where it thinks it should go..... I will never buy another windows product... never.... so sick of someone else deciding they know what I want to do, and going ahead and doing it :(

Does it happen with all browsers?

Windows is telling lies :) since GIMP is a program, not a file type. The Mac used to have this brokenness too, mabe still does. It's still saving the file in its native format (JPEG, PNG, whatever).

You'd have this with any program that registered itself with Windows as the default handlers for images on your system. Did the installer ask if you wanted to do this? Maybe it needs to make the implications of saying "yes" much clearer.

Dump Microsoft Windows :) but in th emeantime you can change the file associations i think (i'm a Linux user, so i'm not certain how to do this in Windows, sorry).

The idea of librea/free software is that _you_ own your own files, and _you_ decide what happens. Of course, it's not necessarily easy to change the way software works, but at least with GIMP it's possible.

You could at least file a bug against GIMP's installer for Windows and say that it needs to explain the step where it sets up GIMP to be the default handler for images; this is done so that if you double-click a JPEG image it opens in GIMP, for example.

In Windows, you can change the default programs for particular filetypes at: " Settings > Apps > Default Apps". Watch out, though - if you right-click a file and say "always use this program to open these file types" it will then set the default to whatever you choose as well. :\
