Dynamically refreshing gradients in a Perl script

Hi - I would like to generate dynamically gradients in a Perl script. If I produce/modify a gradient file, is there some means for refreshing the gradient database in a Perl script. (A procedure call that is equivalent to pressing the Refresh button in the gradient editor.) If not, is it possible to define a gradient without writing it in a gradient file?

Thanks,

-Christian
