Note:

If the current layer has an alpha channel, and "anti-erase" is not set in tool options, erasing will cause transparency.

If the current layer does not have an alpha channel, erasing is roughly equivalent to painting with th ebackground colour from the toolbox (press "d" to restore the toolbo colours to their defaults).

If the image is in Index mode rather than in RGB or greyscale mode (check title bar, or Image->Mode) or if anti-erase is set in Tool Options for the erasor, the tool behaves differently.
