#gimp irc invitation only?
Hi All,
From this page: https://www.gimp.org/irc.html
I clicked on this link: irc://irc.gimp.org/#gimp
expecting the channel to open using Chatzilla plug-in for Firefox, which is how I've almost always accessed #gimp.
What really happened is that Chatzilla presented the following message:
[INFO] This channel is invite-only. You must have an invite from an existing member of the channel to join. Use "/knock #gimp" to ask the channel operators to invite you in. [Knock]
Any ideas what's going on?

There was a netsplit, and when reconnecting, one of the servers set the channel mode to +i(nvite only)
There is no obvious reason why it should be set this way, so I changed it back.

it was instituted freenode wide to accept *only* registered users due to
spamming. it requires you "log" in using a password to your *registered*
id.

Hi Paka,
I just did register with #freenode. But I still get the same "invite-only" message when trying to join #gimp.
Is freenode even related to irc.gimp.org?
Does freenode handle all nick registrations?
Does irc.gimp.org require separate registraton?

no, not "related". freenode provides irc service connections and I can
access #gimp from there.

"registering" alone is not enough, did you do "/msg nickserv identify "

Hi Paka,
It does seem that irc.gimp.org and freenode.org require separate registration. Or else there is some sort of time lag wrt something done with freenode reaching irc.gimp.org. In any event, now I'm registered and identified.
But there is still a message about "invite-only".

I am not an "irc" specialist, but aiui freenode *only* provides access to irc like a server and gimp's irc address is #gimp. And I guess irc.gimp.org is the same, a server providing access to irc which has #gimp. And I would bet that registering one one is the same as the other and effectively is registering on "irc" and not *particularly* freenode or irc.gimp.org.
I do not normally watch #gimp on irc but am able to join using "/j #gimp" from any open screen in weechat. but I do know that having a registered nick and doing the identify using a password is *now* required, and that the message you are receiving about being invited is related to the ident.
maybe someone with more irc knowledge will pipe in.

For what it's worth, I'm getting the same "invite-only" message Elle is. If I /msg nickserv status from #gimp-users (which doesn't seem to have the same restriction), it says I'm status 3, which supposedly means I'm logged in.

You are accessing an entirely different #gimp.
The #gimp on freenode is not the same as the #gimp on irc.freenode.net, they are as different as www.gimp.org and www.freenode.net, run by different people, different physical computers, etc etc.
Does freenode handle all nick registrations?
as far as I know
Only for freenode. You have to register separately with NickServ on the GIMP network.
But the message about invite-only is not the same as Freenode requiring that you are logged in (identified) to a registered username (nick).
For freenode's #gimp you have to be using a nick registered on
freenode, and identified to nickserv, e.g. with
/nickserv id you-password-here
before you join.
On the GIMP network yes, also identify to NickServ in the same way, using the password for gimpnet, but if #gimp is invite-only you can either follow the instructions you were given to use /knock, or message someone whose nick you know, or try #gimp-users and see if there's anyone around, or try in a little while.
The channel is indeed invite-only on gimpnet right now.

#gimp irc invitation only?
Hi All,
For two days now I've wanted to log into #gimp IRC and ask a question.
I think right now I can now log in the way I always have, without identifying myself as really me, belonging to my registered nickname.
But what I really want to know is how to actually join a channel and at the same time identify myself.
I have a generic chatzilla window open.
What, exactly, do I type to join #gimp and at the same time identify myself?
I've perused the internet several times over the last two days and come up with a whole lot of stuff, none of which actually lists the actual specific commands to type.
Best, Elle

(1) to identify yourelf (to log in, basically) /nickserv identify your-password-here
If chatzilla says no such command nickserv, use /msg nickserv identify your-password-here but this is not secure (if for some reason the real nickserv is down, someone else might use that nick and receive your password in clear text!)
Obviously, use your gimpnet IRC password, not you-password-here. Unless you actually used your-password-here as your gimpnet password :) :)
(2) to join #gimp
/j #gimp
or
/join #gimp
