Installing 2.6.7 in Ubuntu

Ok, so, I downloaded Gimp 2.6.7 from GetDeb along with the library files and the data files. When I try to run the package installer, I get an error that there is a dependency problem with the lib files.

Is my problem caused because I have not uninstalled 2.6.6? I know it's not a problem uninstalling 2.6.6, but I hate to do that if it isn't necessary - I'm guessing all my plugins, etc. would have to be reinstalled if 2.6.7 install is not successful.

Adivse would be most appreciated. If this question has already been asked, or if it does not belong here, please let me know and also accept my apologies.

Could you be more specific about the dependency issues ? dpkg should give you quite a lot of details about what is going wrong. Also, which ubuntu are you using ?

I guess the problem is in versions of babl and gegl but without details I can't be sure. (jauty ships with versions 0.0.22, but gimp 2.6.7 needs version 0.1)

Ok, sorry. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04. I downloaded the three packages and used the package installer to extract and install two of the three, but received this error when attempting to install the application package:

Error: Dependency not satisfiable Libgimp 2.0 (>=2.6.7)

So, I guess there is something wrong with my libgimp, but am not certain how to fix it.

Thanks for your reply. Hopefully this additional info will help you identify my problem.

Sounds like a bug with Ubuntu's package management, maybe you should report a bug against it at launchpad?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gimp/+filebug

Or did you not try to install it via the package manager? (synaptic, apt, etc)

If the problem is with libgimp I think you will have to uninstall the old version of gimp to make it work.

From this article :

http://lazyubuntu.com/how-to-install-gimp-267-on-ubuntu-904-jaunty-jackalope.html I assume that the gegl and babl libraries are included in one of the GetDeb packages.

I cannot understand why Ubuntu is celebrated for its ease of use, considering how many people complain about similar issues and suggest so complicated solutions.

With Debian, "testing" distribution, to change from GIMP 2.6.6 to GIMP 2.6.7 is automatically done the next time you make an update. This needs two commands in a terminal, or two clicks on the update-manager.

Jozef:

I don't need to defend Ubuntu, nor do I take offense at your comment, however, consider that, eventually, will offer updates for Gimp to include 2.6.7, but it takes time. I had to post (on the Ubuntu forum, I think), in order to install 2.6.6, and something tells me that I had to uninstall a previous version to do so. The really great bits of "news" to keep in mind about all this is that Linux in general makes all of this free and relatively simple. For me to uninstall Gimp is also a two click deal, to reinstall another two clicks. In the case of 2.6.7, a couple of copy/pastes, all done in the open and above board. I don't have to worry about cyber police showing up at my door or Cyber Trojans jumping out of the 'horse' after I install some new piece of software, and, for the occasional time when something doesn't work right away, I have a wonderful site like this one one which to post a question, and wonderful helpers like you jump in and show me the way.

The problem I posted is really a minor inconvenience, and, Gimp 2.6.6 has been running happily on my Ubuntu machine since I installed it.

I probably should try some other flavors of Linux (actually, I have - and even tried to install BSD which, unfortunately, doesn't like my flavor of video adapter). Experimenting with OS's is, after all, what initially brought me to Linux and the Gimp (doubt I would have discovered Gimp from Windows even though I now have it installed on the Win side of my setup). Usually, though, my foray into 'new' OS's occurs when I am redoing my computer setup (reformatting or changing drives, etc.). When stuff is working, I usually just use the computer to do that stuff, if you know what I mean.

Sorry to be so long-winded. I'll probably take a stab at installing 2.6.7 from scratch sometime today.

Thanks again for the reply.

Please consider that Gimp 2.6.7 is a developpement version and as such has no place in Ubuntu's repositories.

Moreover, if you really want it, compiling it from source is pretty straightforward (i've been compiling every gimp since 2.3.9 and never got into any serious issue)

You got it wrong, GIMP 2.7.0 is unstable, GIMP 2.6.7 is stable

No, it's not. 2.6 is stable, receiving only bugfixes.

Does getdeb provide access to apt throut sources.list? If so, the best way is to modify your /etc/apt/sources.list adding the getdeb repository.

If not, try installing first the lib and data debs and then the gimp one.

My two cents
