tool-config cannot be saved

hi,

i wonder how i can save my tool-seetings, for example for "move" etc. - i hit the save-button, but each time i reload the gimp, default settings are used, my settings are not restored.

same for "view" - i dont like the layer-border - but i dont know how to switch it of permanently - any hints?

ps: can anybody explain why new created layers with no content are sized to the document-size? it slows gimp down if i use many layers and each of them ist oversized... layer-sizes do not make sense for my understanding - why not handle layer-sizes like photoshop does?

greets, falk

Whichever way the default goes, some people are going to have to change it. I have no idea how Photoshop handles layers, but if new GIMP layers came up at some arbitrarily small size, in a lot of cases you would have to resize them anyway. As it is, if you dislike the speed hit, just shrink the layer down to a size that is more convenient for you. You may argue that you would have to do that all the itme, but then what is the "correct" default size (hint: there isn't one).

yes, i do need to change them - but why nothing is saved - even i hit the"save button" in the toolsettings-dialog? i think the functionality to change and save is wanted - but does not work - it worked not in 1.3.8 - and it does not work in 1.3.10 - or maybe i'm unable to get it working? if i start gimp from console all it says while clicking the save button is "Save clicked" - maybe this functionality is'nt included yet?

how about this: if i create a layer, there is no size, because the layer contains nothing, if i put pixels in, gimp can always get the outer pixels which mark the max x-size/y-size of my layer, so gimp would always "know" the size of the layer and nobody should ever need think about"layer sizes". (except for shrinking etc.)

about resizing a layer i'd like to say it's not really handy to enter the dimension-values x/y by hand - there should be a visual tool, maybe similar to the crop-tool to do layer-resizing and stuff.

What GIMP version? Sounds like 1.3.x, which is work in progress. You should not use it if you do not know what is going on. In this case, buttons are there, but code for settings is not there yet. Use a console and see what happens, or use 1.2, in which any problem is a bug or just not implemented (nor will, 1.2 only gets fixes).

Development versions are released so people can help find the problems, not blindly complain.

I think not. Dunno if it is planned either. Search in bugzilla, maybe a "wish" bug will make it come true as preference it if nobody thought of it.

You can chose smaller size when you create new layers. You can also resize them using crop tool (make sure "current layer only" is activated before cropping).

of them ist oversized... layer-sizes do not make sense for my understanding - why not handle layer-sizes like photoshop does?

Ask the coders. Maybe they wanted to do it that way, or only thought to do it that way. Go figure, it started as an univ project, and now is a hobby for others.

Are you sure the problem is not somewhere else, like the extra mem GIMP requires (1 byte per image pixel for internal selection, and 3 bytes per image pixel for the colour data you see)? There have been talks about this, including some interesting solutions, but again, work in progress. And coders can not really know what PS does (and maybe not care, it is hobby), it could be wasting RAM too.

hi,

and who defines what a so called "problem" is? i cannot remember to"blindly complain" about things, i just told my thoughts as a gimp user in a gimp-user mailinglist - thats all.

cheers, falk

Investigation and debugging do. Later you checked the console (that is another mail I got now), but firstly you did not considerer "not implemented yet".

From your mail:

---88---

Running from a console is good thing, as is being able to run a debugger or at least get stack traces. Also being able to poke inside the code helps. Patches fixing the problem help even more.

If you do not feel happy with all that, use 1.2 and wait until 1.4 is released, or 1.3 is announced to be in the final phase. Currently 1.3 is in constant change, so what works today can stop working for some days. Font tool has been in that state for some time, ie, and now it is not finished either.
