The way you formed the question makes it absolutely unclear to me, but I'm just guessing you're trying to figure out the relation between gimp-freetype and regular X font servers.

Basically gimp-freetype renders the fonts without any help of any font server or X. It is using the freetype raterizer and only needs the actual true type font files. You only need a TTF capable font server if you want to use the old text tools (including gDynText) or want other X applications to use the TT fonts.

I have just installed a set of truetype fonts on my Debian Linux box and got them working.

What you need to do is make sure that the X font server you are running supports truetype fonts. (The Docs should say so). In my case, xfs-xtt is my font server.

Follow the instructions pertinent to your distribution for installation and Gimp will automagically pick up the fonts with the text tool.
