Help needed with batch script

Hello, I'm new here, am after a batch script that accomplishes something that's likely a bit off center to this community. I have two folders containing sequential pairs of TIFFs, i.e. photo 1 in folder 1 relates to photo 1 in folder 2 and so forth. I need each image pair to open as a layered document in Gimp with photo 1 from folder 2 on top. I then need that top layer's blend mode set to Difference, the color space converted to grayscale, and then the flattened image exported as a 16-bit TIFF into a folder 3. And I need that done to batch process each sequential image pair in folders 1 and 2.

I'm unfamiliar with the Python Console (was fine with the macro recording function in Photoshop), but have a coder friend who is willing to take a look. so my reaching out here is hopefully to give him a leg up. Your help is surely appreciated. Am thrilled to now be in Gimp.
