I am new to Gimp and have just saved my first couple of pictures but they show the GIMP logo and not the thumbnail image of the actual picture. Can I change this and get rid of the Gimp image

If you have saved the images in XCF format then the answer is probably no - your browser doesn't understand GIMP's native format. This might be considered a small price to pay for the extra information (layers etc) that is stored in the XCF files as against, say, a JPG.
