Nope I've never needed to buy a book, dvd, or anything for the Gimp. When I started Gimp about 6-7 years ago there wasn't much resources for the gimp as there is now, and I learned what I learned from the ones, that were out, and tinkering around and coming up with my own style. As a matter of fact I've made my own Gimp hotkeys pdf book (aka cheat sheet) that you can print out, and put on your wall, which will help with designing in Gimp, and you can download that at http://gimppimp.tk/downloads

Peck's book helped, but I learn more from the forums, tutorials.

Never have bought a book, learned it all myself and where I needed help, the internet has been an invaluable resource. I've had some extremely basic Photoshop training, but nothing I couldn't learn on my own

Akkaqna Peck's book Beginning GIMP: From Novice to Professional has been a great and useful reference
