Yes, but prices for winners are important!

Yes, GFX contests are a good idea! It brings community together even if there are no prices available

No, contests are not important

Maybe, it is however not a tragedy if there are no contests. I don't care much.

GIMP accepted for Google summer of Code 2010

Some minutes ago the list of accepted applications for Googles Summer of Code 2010 has been published. GIMP has been accepted in this years GSoC and will be sponsored!

Every year Google sponsors students that decide to enhance an open source software by programming something for that program. Every student has a mentor that guides the student through the programming phase. GIMP currently has 2 mentors available this year.

Last year these projects were accepted.

There is a google doc available listing current GSoC ideas here: http://docs.google.com/View?id=dfbrn6hs_12c7h97fdc
If you don't know what an idea is about you can ask the developer in the official GIMP IRC (irc.gimp.org: #gimp).

Project ideas:
  • JavaScript scripting in the core and/or plug-ins - using GNOME Java Script infrastructure (GJS)

  • Make menus searchable

  • Implement the free transform tool

  • Implement and add infrastructure for on-canvas tool drawing/options

  • Replace the GimpSizeEntry widget

  • Brush selector wigdet

  • Basic gegl based paint tool

  • Start making your applications now! The official application for GSoC starts March 29th and ends April 9th. There is a timeline available.

      I'm very excited about this. I love the Gimp and I hope this produces some great results but even if it doesn't, it shows that Gimp is getting some great attention.

      For the records, GIMP participated in Summer of Code in 2006, 2008 and 2009:

      * http://code.google.com/soc/2008/gimp/about.html
      * http://socghop.appspot.com/gsoc/org/home/google/gsoc2009/gimp

      Some of the projects are included in GIMP, some are still residing in their own branches in Git.

      Implementing the Free-Transform tool, is the project that I like the most. Something similar to how Inkscape handles transforming, rotating and skewing would help a lot. Adobe Flash transforming tool is also really nice to work with.

      Yeah a free transform tool would really help.
