Every year, Google runs its “Google Summer of Code” (GSoc) to support open-source projects by paying students for development. This year, the 7th GSoC is held.

How does it work?

Open-source projects can submit their participance applications to Google until Mar 11. On Mar 18, the selected projects are announced; developers can think about what student projects would be useful. Students then can apply until Apr 8. When all formalities are finished, the coding time is from Apr 25 until late August.

Google will provide a stipend of 5500 USD per accepted student developer, of which 5000 USD goes to the student and 500 USD goes to the mentoring organization.
