Install 2.8 alongside 2.6 in windows?

The release notes for 2.8 I found suggest that it isn't possible to install 2.8 alongside 2.6 in Windows (7 x64 in my case) at least using the pre-built windows installer?

The installer for GIMP 2.8.0 will uninstall older versions first, but you can simply reinstall GIMP 2.6.12 afterwards.

Reason for asking is that there are a number of 2.6 plug-ins I need, and looking at the GIMP plug-in repository few indicate 2.8 compatibility. So I would need to test them myself but if they don't work I would go back to 2.6, at least for some tasks.

Old plugins should keep working - if you find any that don't, report that as a bug (this includes 32bit plugins running on 64bit GIMP).

Install 2.8 alongside 2.6 in windows?

I did this myself; 2.6 x86 after 2.8 x64 onto w7 x64. It even remembered all my old settings for 2.6.12, but forgot my most recently opened xcf files. I don't know if it will work with the same target machine type though, I suppose you might be able to select a different install directory.

GIMP 2.8 by default installs to a different directory than older versions.

I installed 2.6 after 2.8 (using a different installation directory) and have yet to encounter any problems in either one.

I installed 2.8 in a different directory (I installed it on my external hard drive) from the start. 2.8 removed my desktop icon for 2.6, but everything for 2.6 was still on my C drive (where I had it originally installed). I went into the bin folder and manually started 2.6 (and also created a new shortcut for my desktop) and it worked.
