Welcome to the GIMP. The Shadows/Highlights controls in PS/Lightroom are pretty nice. As you've discovered there is not an exact equivalent for GIMP. And as Alexandre indicated, we are on the cusp of a long-worked on, and long-anticipated new version release, 2.10, that promises significant new features.

Attached to this reply are two files, one a .scm script file, the other a .zip file of more .scm files (just easier to send the two :-) These script files are vintage 2012, so somewhat old (though algorithms used for image calculations don't really "age"). The standalone file is a Shadows/Highlights adjustment -- it gives only one parameter, opacity, so it attempts to modify both shadows and highlights in one go. It may serve your needs. The .zip file contains a collection of script files one of which is a shadow recovery script. Also, there is not a highlight analog. See if these give you acceptable results until we GIMP 2.10 is released and a more modern tool becomes available.

to find out where to put these .scm files so they appear in GIMP for use, usually on the Filters menu, sometimes on a Filter submenu.

Hi Julie,

Shadows-Highlights will probably be part of upcoming GIMP 2.10. It depends on how much good/ready-for-production this filter will be by the time we release.

Hi Julie,

Shadows-Highlights will probably be part of upcoming GIMP 2.10. It depends on how much good/ready-for-production this filter will be by the time we release.

You will most likely find yourself looking for tools in the GIMP that aren't there, because it evolved separately from Photoshop and the workflow for most tasks is just plain different. That has been my experience from the other side, as a long time GIMP users experimenting with Photoshop.

The GIMP will get the job done, once you get used to it. Initially you will be reading a lot of tutorials and watching a lot of videos. Reading through the online (or local) manual and taking notes where and as "aha!" moments arrive would also be helpful.

You already found out where to ask questions when you get stuck.

My bad. Sorry all. Because Firefox let me right-click and it seemed to download a file, I assume, well, that it was downloading the file. Interestingly, there is a file, as I attached in my earlier email, but its content is HTML and its primary content is "FILE NOT FOUND." So, NOT working from Wisconsin after all.

Probably not working anywhere, the latest version of the "script" stored at archive.org is a page from 2016 saying "file not found"

For GIMP operators running the very latest version of babl/GEGL/GIMP built from sources in git, there is also an operation available from under Tool/Gegl Operation menu called shadow-highlights, implemented for GNOME Photos based on the shadow-highlights in Darktable which itself was inspired by script-fu scripts. This will give live on-canvas previews as parameters are tuned.
