Gimpm 2.10 8-bit warning when opening tiff

Hello,

I am using Gimp 2.10 on Windows 10, fully updated. When I open tiffs, I still get the warning that the file is 16 bit and Gimp can't handle that. I thought it could do 16-bit now? How do I get a 16-bit tiff to open?

Thanks, Kevin

Historically (2.8.x and earlier) GIMP would open 16-bit TIFFs but either round or truncate (not sure which) them to 8 bits per pixel. Supposedly one of the major improvements with GIMP 2.10 would be full support for 16 (and more) bits per channel.

But like you, I have this exact same problem with GIMP 2.10.2 (and before that, 2.10.0) in Windows 7-32 bit Professional, but not in Windows 7-64 bit Home Premium (two separate computers). I even tried uninstalling and re-installing, but the error persists.

I have been using GIMP since at least 2.0 and probably 1.2.x, and have never experienced anything like this before. My home computer (64-bit OS) has been running versions of GIMP since I got it more than five years ago, and my work computer (32-bit OS) has been running versions of GIMP since I got it about three years ago. Neither has given my any problems to speak of with GIMP (other than printing) before now.

Oh, and I've now made very similar replies about two different 2.10 bugs, the other being the inability to save--W7-64 works fine, W7-32 fails every time.

The dual 64/32 bit Gimp 2.10.2 Windows installer from gimp.org is broken as far as the 32 bit side is concerned. Hopefully rectified on the next release.

Until it is fixed, there is a 32 bit Windows 2.10 'portable' Unpack, make a shortcut to one of the language launchers.

As far as 64 bit is concerned, check that all old files from previous installations have gone. This post illustrates one users problem.

I'm using 64 bit Windows home. I just installed Gimp on a work laptop, W7, I think Professional. I'll try it and report back.

Thanks for the info. I'm on 64 bit. Looks like I'll be doing a big cleanup and reinstall.

I forgot to try this yesterday, but see my reply below.

Yup, that worked. Cleaned up wit Revo and then added scanning from JV tools and ccleaner. I still had tot fins and delete some stuff from appdata. Then installed 2.10 again. Tiffs open without complaint.

Gimpm 2.10 8-bit warning when opening tiff

I'm pleased to report that GIMP 2.10.4 and/or its installer for 32-bit Windows 7 has solved the problem of not being able to open a 16-bit TIFF as such (previously 16-bit TIFFs were truncated or rounded to 8 bits).
