Outline people in photos

Hi all,

I am a newcomer to GIMP and am just getting to grips with it However I would be grateful if someone can help.I have a family photograph from my wifes grandmothers wedding which I have scanned. I am wanting to make an outline drawing of the people in the photo and adding a letter or number in the outlines so I can identify the people in the photo, much like they do in newspapers to identify people in a large group photo.

TIA

Use the foreground select tool. Once you make the selection, fill it with black or any color you want. See http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-tool-foreground-select.html

However the lasso tool might be an easier way, quickmask the selection to make final adjustments on it. See http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-tool-free-select.html and http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-using-quickmask.html

Or if you want automatic outlining, you might also experiment with the various Filters->Edge Detect options -- the one called simply "Edge" is the easiest to preview since you can compare several different algorithms easily. You'll probably need to clean up the output afterward, though, so Owen's suggestions may be easier.

Apart from Owen's suggestion, also try:

FILTERS > EDGE DETECT

Depending on the image, one of the options there may prove useful.

Look at this: http://fotoalbum.seniorennet.be/senioraa/urls/foto=934901

I started with outlines by creating "paths", but I think that just putting numberlabels on people is shorter and better. Use a separate label-layer for them.

Seasons Greetings from #35.
