getting a screen shot of a screensaver?

Hi, I'd like to do something, and I'm unsure it's even currently possible. So first I'll ask if there's a way to do it, and if not, then I'll ask how do I submit a feature request.

So I'd like to propose to several local libraries (my town's & my school's) that they begin using World Community Grid (www.worldcommunitygrid.org) as the screensaver in their computer lab. It seems like a win-win-- W.C.G. only uses what you're not, and has direct, real-world flesh-and-blood positive benefits. I visited my school library yesterday and spoke with a lab manager. He told me the best route to take would be to send an email to the I.T. dept. So I'll work on that, but in order to help me sell this idea stronger, I'd like to include several screenshots of what the W.C.G. screensaver looks like in action. In order to do so, I think I'd need the Create-->Screen Shot function to have a shortcut key assigned to it. But I could not for the life of me figure out how to, and believe me I tried. EXCEPT... maybe the catch-22 is that pressing a shortcut key to grab a screenshot will instantly disable a screensaver. Hmmm.... anybody have a clue how to go about this?

Thanks!

getting a screen shot of a screensaver?

Tell GIMP to grab a screenshot of the entire screen after a delay, and then immediately after you activate the screenshot, before the delay expires, lock the screen so the screensaver kicks in. I tested this and it works on Linux; I don't know if it will work on Windows.

Another option would be to run the Grid inside a VM, and take a screenshot of the VM window.

Aside from the issue of taking a screen shot of a screen saver, note that putting library computers on the World Community Grid will increase their electricity bills:

I hope you will make sure that the people to whom you make this proposal are aware of this fact. Given this fact, it is unlikely that they will be willing to join their computers to the Grid, but this is just why it would be disingenuous not to make them aware of it.

Regards,

Jonathan Kamens

One option is to use the screensaver selection/option program, select the screensaver you want then do a snapshot of the window with the demo of the effect.

Yep, I'm on a Windoze machine. I have no idea how to "lock the screen so the screensaver kicks in"... Googling... I found a way to set up a hot-key trigger... but that leads to more issues. The hot-key does trigger BOINC, but then BOINC flashes something like "Screensaver suspended, computer in use." Forget this, it's now more trouble than it's worth, I'm just gonna use point 'em to the screenshots on the website.

Yep yep, all over that, as far as not wanting to inadvertently cause problems for anyone... That link includes this quote: "... you may see a slight increase in your electricity costs. Exactly how much this increase will affect you depends on conditions where you live and how you have set your preferences." I had already planned to advise that the library/school set their settings under Device profiles to either Minimum impact or Power saver. I figure even if they choose minimum impact, a whole room of computers sitting idle a portion of the day would have at least SOME real-world impact as far as their contribution to WCG... Thanks for the reminder, good thought...

Yep, good thought, but again I'm befuddled since doing so only shows me a generic screenshot of BOINC, while WCG is just one project that can run inside of BOINC. I'm giving up on the screenshot idea.... oh well... Thanks for the assistance!

You've probably tried this, but... I'm on a Windows computer, too, and have been taking a lot of screenshots lately just using the PrintScreen button. Then I paste it into GIMP. Does that work while the screensaver is turned on? (I don't know, I never use a screensaver)

Hit the PrintScreen key on your keyboard (usually located next to F12). Windows traps the keystroke and dumps a copy of the screen otno the system clipboard, which you can then paste into GIMP. It's not foolproof but it does work on most applications, screensavers included.
