LOVE thread - single window mode

LOVE it

Congrats to the Devs for adding this feature - also the single reason I jumped to R28 as soon as it was announced

(a few tweaks to make it reliable on Windows 7 (works ok on WinXP) would be nice but not essential)

LOVE thread - single window mode

Yse, single-window mode is definitely a new feature to love. I mentioned it elsewhere but in every previous version of GIMP I've used to date, every time I open an image file for any reason the first thing I have to contend with is the fact that it overlaps the toolbox windows.

I tried everything I knew how in the user preferences, just to no avail. Window positions only worked partially, because then the image window and right-hand toolbox were overlapping. With the "Normal" toolbox hints, my toolboxes got obscured below the image window (bad), and with "keep above" or "utility" (which as of 2.6 also includes keep-above) hints it was my image window (and associated menus) getting buried under the toolboxes (even worse). Combining everything into a single window finally means that I don't have this constant struggle between whether the image or toolbox is the one on top of the other, they're side by side and equally visible.

Now if GIMP would just remember that I want to run it maximized....

This may be a function of your windowmanager, which you failed to mention. KDE has the ability to designate specific windows to maintain size and position in addition to which desktop.

Lucky me, it can be turned off.

Maybe I will eventually decide that I like it. Can't reasonably say otherwise, it will mostly depend on the specific design features and whether it really does remove more annoyances than it causes.

Living proof, it is impossible for the GIMP devs to make everybody perfectly happy all the time. That's the real world for ya....

Win XP. Application shortcuts (.lnk files) can be configured to hint that the target application should be displayed in normal or maximized state. Likewise, an application can request one of its windows to be displayed in normal or maximized state.

But in practice, setting my GIMP shortcut for "maximized" only causes GIMP's splash loading screen to be maximized, GIMP's actual Image window(s) is non-maximized and takes on whatever size/position values were saved in sessionrc.

You are right Paul; and the whole bunch of new features to come up to the 3.8 version. See the Roadmap: http://wiki.gimp.org/index.php/Roadmap

I pray to liver longer and enjoy the GIMP.

Thank you to the developers and all supporting people.

I like also the single View mode! I like GIMP anyway.

But the single-mode also causes, that under the command -View -New View opens a new Tab and not, as I would have wished, a new window which I can take to an 2. Monitor for full size view.

Perhaps you could change that so in the future.

Thanks for Your work

Yes, even Windows allows you to set shortcut to launch a program maximised.

Right-click the Start Menu icon. Select Properties and under the Shortcut tab on the Properties dialogue that opens, you'll find an option to run Normal Window/Minimised/Maximised.

I believe this was commented that the option maximised the splash screen/window rather than the program window.... But then that's windoz :^)

No, it's pretty much a fault of GTK+ on Windows.
