I manually build the last 2.6 release, which ended up in this "mix". I think authors already started documenting 2.8.

I can build another 2.6 tag, which will probably miss a lot of translations.

If it really is only the 2.6 splash screen which is missing, I'd be tempted to copy it to our http server and leave it be.
