Overlaying One Photo Over Another

I'm creating a CD cover and would like to overlay a transparent photo over a really nice background photo. I've read extensively through the manual and have viewed tutorials so I know this can be done. I printed and tried to follow the "How to change background of an image" without success. I've truly tried to figure this out myself as I know too many people don't even try, they just post for help. So, if I might ask, would someone provide the step by step to accompish what I'm trying? I can open the two images, use fuzzy select on the white area on the photo but then can't get it on a new layer to overlay, and I don't know how to make the image transparent. Sorry to be asking for help but sincerely appreciate anyone taking time to assist. Thank you...

In overlay image: select->all, edit->copy.

In background image: edit->paste as new layer.

You now have an image with two layers. Delete/fade/edit/whatever you need to on the top layer.

While I concur with what Chris wrote, I don't see where he mentioned that the transparency setting controlled by the slider in the layers dialog box labeled "opacity". Had I responded first, my answer would have been the same, but the sentence

Delete/fade/edit/whatever you need to on the top layer.

would have said

"in the image as the layer, adjust the opacity slider to the desired value; if you need more intensity in the overlaid image, you can adjust the opacity of the background, or add additional copies of the overlayed image."

Thanks Chris, appreciate the help. Makes sense but I'm still having trouble. I follow your instructions and get a 2 layer picture but all I can see is a white page? I can't get to the 1st layer (background). The two photos are different sizes and resolutions if that makes any difference. It seems I'm just missing like one step or something??? Thanks again Chris...

I just wanted to add, the photo for the top layer is our group lead singer so there's some white space around some of the picture that needs to be deleted. Before I select all, I use the fuzzy select tool to highlight only the person in the picture, then do select all, edit, copy.

Use the layers dialog to switch layers, toggle visibility, adjust opacity, etc. A decent tutorial from a quick search: http://www.tankedup-imaging.com/gimp/layers.html

The manual: http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-image-combining.html

I can't get to the 1st layer (background). The two photos are different sizes and resolutions if that makes any difference.

I'd make sure the image you are pasting is smaller than or equal size to the one you're pasting into - at least for now. Once you get the hang of working with layers, it won't be a big deal: if you paste a larger image onto a smaller one, you can use the scale tool to reduce it afterward. But for now I suggest experimenting with similar-sized images until you feel comfortable with the layers dialog.

OK - so what you want to do here is fuzzy select, then copy. Skip the select all, or you will have to repeat the fuzzy select step after you paste.

In other words: when you make a selection (as with the fuzzy select tool) and copy, only the selected area is copied to the clipboard. Make sense?

Man, you're gonna think I'm a complete dumbass. If I can get this to work once, I know I'll be ok. It appears I've copied the singer's pic onto the background but I can't get past the white screen? I can choose reverse layers and my background is layer 1 but layer 2 is a complete white screen. I can't seem to find the opacity commands? Maybe I'll experiment with 2 pix that I know are the same size and resolution? It maybe seems like the overlay is HUGE compared to the background but I can't seem to be able to resize. Like I said, once I get it to work, then I can play with detail. Can't tell ya how much I appreciate the help......

That's my guess too. Try Image->Scale image on the singer's pic and scale it down to roughly the same size as the background pic. Then do your select, copy, paste as layer.

This is frustrating. GIMP seems quite simple but obviously first discovery isn't intuitive. I successfully copied and layered two photos, I verify by reversing the layers, all good. I think I found opacity in the toolbar but I change it and there's no difference. I'm thinkin I'm sooo close but am just still missing something. A bit more help I think, and I'll owe a bit of whatever you choose to alter your mood :-)

I think I'm using Gimp 2.6. I see a 2.6.9 out there maybe? Maybe a have a version just a bit older than what you're giving me instructions for?

Opacity is not in the toolbar; it's in the layers dialog, accessible by the keyboard shortcut CTRL+L, or by selecting the "layers" item in the through the windows "Dockable dialogs" menu item in the menu bar of an image, or an empty composition window.

If you can manage to manipulate layer visibility, opacity is the slider above that. In Chapter 14 of the on-line documentation (at ,
figure 14.1 shows where the "opacity" slider is located; the label is third from the top, below "layers" and "Mode".

No - we're using the same version (close enough anyway).

Here's a link to a file with two layers: https://www.yousendit.com/download/K0JSUXVsSWhCMTVFQlE9PQ

In the layers dialog, you should be able to move bing up and down, and also control the opacity of each layer.

If you're still stuck, send me you last attempt and I'll take a look.

If the lead singer is on white background, and you want the background image to show where the singer image is white, you might want to cut the singer out of the white. I've written a tutorial on that here:

I looked at Bing on stage, and that's where I want to go but then make Bing transparent so the background shows through. I appreciate your offer, if you want to give me an email address I'll send you a 2 layer pic. In my pic you can reverse the layers to see both but one is pure white whereas it's actually a pic of the singer. If you don't want to post your email, just send it to oneontheedge@yahoo.com.

Thanks again,

It's pure white most likely because the singer pic is huge compared to the background image. So, when you pasted it into the background pic, only the white part is showing, but the new layer is extending past the image edge and hidden...

Branko, you're absolutely correct. I can see where the pic of the singer extends way beyond the frame to the right and on the bottom, but I can't figure out how to resize that pic to fit the frame?

I'm not dumb but I sure feel like it right now. And I'm suppose to be working but am doing this band stuff cause it's more fun....

Select the singer layer in layers palette, and press Shift+T (transform). You'll be able to scale it either by typing in the dimensions or using the handles.

Sorry, I don't think "transform" will change the size; what you need to do, instead, is to select the layer you want to change, and from the layers menu, select "scale layer".

Sorry, I meant "transform" as a description for the shortcut "T". It's actually a scale tool.

Spent many hours of experimenting, using the guidance you gents have given and I've learned much. Greatest feature of GIMP is edit, and the ability to go back to before whatever I've done. I used this a lot!!! But, I have accomplished what I hoped. Honestly, I'm not sure how I got to the point I'm at but I can figure it out again. But your suggestions were invaluable and very much appreciated. I don't like people who download an ap then don't take time to read and learn but instead simply 'use' the hard earned expertise of others. I'll be making a donation to the developers of GIMP, as it's a tremendously powerful piece of software. I'm sure I'll be back with question in the future but for now simply, Thank You.........
