About GIMP
The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is open Software. It's a free image and graphics manipulation application, which has almost no disadvantages compared to the commercial image processing program Photoshop of Adobe for a wide range of applications. The software is available under the GNU Public License and its target users are people that need professional image processing software, people that don't want to buy expensive licences, are open minded to free and OpenSource-software and the advantages that results of using GIMP. GIMP can be used to
- create layouts for websites,
- to generate pictures and enhance existing images,
- and erverything else that has to do with 2D (bitmap based) graphics.
GIMP is being developed by many different people that not get any fee for it. Everybody can see the sourcecode and take part in the developement (i.e. writing documentation, report bugs, write scripts for it or adding features to the program itself). GIMP is listed in the Google "Summer of Code" project (not for 2007 but hopefully next year) and in the OpenUsability-project. In these projects someone applies with an idea or feature which is not yet or poorly implemented in the GIMP and earns money after completion.
