Applying a partially transparent gradient to text

Hello, GIMP users! After years of not having a computer that could do what I wanted, I finally turned GIMP into a beefier version of ClarisWorks! :p

Anyways, I'm working on a new Steam avatar and I want to apply a partially transparent gradient to a character, and then add a pair of black opaque characters over top of that, but my gradient keeps coming out white where it should be transparent. Is there something wrong with how I'm designing the gradient? Or maybe how I'm applying it? Please see the image below.

Note to mods: I searched google extensively for answers to this specific question and it led me to this forum, but not quite the answer I'm looking for. However if this question has been answered elsewhere, please provide a link before locking/deleting this thread. Thanks!
