Centering text

Is there a simple way to center text in The Gimp? Right now it seems like a guessing game, trying to align text to the ruler. I have used Photo-Paint under Linux and you could select the object, type CTRL-A and center the object/text.

Cut and paste seems to work for centering, but I'm not 100% sure it works all the time.

Thanks.

With gimp-1.2, you can use "Align Visible Layers" to center text layers but that's not really what I'd call 'a simple way'. However I can't think of a simpler one right now.
