While im on a roll !!

Having sorted my opera GIF problem, I have another problem ! ...

I admit this is a long shot but here goes ....

In order to see how my web pages are displayed in various browsers I have the following installed on my Debian Woody system ...

-rw------- 1 web root 285 Apr 5 09:51 Konqueror -rw------- 1 web root 253 Apr 5 09:47 dillo0.6.4 -rw------- 1 web root 280 Apr 5 10:55 mozilla1.0.2 -rw------- 1 web root 278 Apr 5 11:07 netscape4.8 -rw------- 1 web root 283 Apr 5 11:06 netscape6.2.3 -rw------- 1 web root 281 Apr 5 11:06 netscape7.02 -rw------- 1 web root 211 Apr 3 21:46 opera6.12 -rw------- 1 web root 284 Apr 5 09:42 phoenix

They appear to fight !

I first notices problems with xmms locking and fighting with phoenix xmms hung or locked up for 30 Secs ...

Since using them I have noticed random occasional total system lockups, lockups on Debian !??!?
They have been installed from source, no .deb packages avalible.

Its a long shot but anyone got any ideas how to get round this problem ?

Maybe this can be due to the sound server (arts). I've had such problems when using arts instead of OSS in xmms. But not with the browser though. Are you using KDE?

Sincerely,

Olivier.

Before you add RAM, uncheck the "Autosuspend if idle for" option in the "Sound System" tab in "Sound & Multimedia" tab in the KDE Control Center.

Also, be sure that the "Start aRts soundserver on startup" option is set (checked).

in xmms menu, go to the plugin setup, then in the input/output ones, go to the output and see if you can choose oss and alsa there in case you were using arts. Also, the device used may not be the good one. You can specify it manually if the one used does not exists.

Olivier.

An admission .... shortly after I wrote this email my system threw a BIG wobbly, IDE errors, system crash etc ... traced it down to faulty power connection to my hard drive, the same hard drive which has my ogg files on it!

This may well have explained some of my system crashes - boy am I releaved to have nailed that one ...

Anyhow in my newly stabalized system I still have xmms hanging for 20-30s when first booted before it works, though this is not to much of a problem.

I went into plugin setup then I/O, went to O/P was using OSS Driver 1.2.7, Tried the other but this is the only one that works !

Will continue to monitor system, If stability is long term will put xmms xyxtem crashed sown to hard drive power.
