Color map gobbles up cpu...

I am using gimp 1.2.3 on gentoo-1.4. When I try to redefine the color map for a gif, gimp starts to behave strangely and gobbles up cpu. Buttons disappear and only reappear when I scroll over them.

A few hints as to what might be happening would be a big help.
