gradients and text

Is there a way to apply a gradient to text, so only the letters get the color, not the background in the text layer?

Thanks.

Easilly. Select only the letters and apply gradient on them. Assuming text is on separate transparent layer, select that layer on Layers tab, and then Layers>Transparency>Alpha to selection.

Even faster: check "keep transparency" for the text layer in the layers dialog and apply the gradient as usual.
