thumbnail layer in tiffs!

thumbnail layer in tiffs!

When I open tiff files (and perhaps other formats) I get the image, plus a tiny thumbnail of that image on its own layer, right up to the top left of the image!

is this a feature? if so, how can it be de-activated?
