In the color picker, what is "index"?

In the color picker, when I Shift-Click a pixel and select pixel as the display type, Red, Green, Blue and something called index pops up and I don't know what it represents.

You have a color-indexed image, typically a .gif but can be other image formats.

The number refers to the color location in the image colormap.

No colormap? Use Windows -> Dockable Dialogues -> Colormap

see screenshot.
