Can't browse directories in GIMP 2.10

Hello everyone,

I just installed GIMP 2.10 and when I try to open or save an image it doesn't allow me to browse my hard drives and the option on the top to navigate through folders is not present.

Then uninstalled 2.10 and installed again 2.8.22 and everything was fine.

Installed again 2.10 but still the directories are not showing. If I click on the user folder it will show the content but won't let me go up directories.

I'm running it on windows 8.1.

Any idea of what is happening? I searched for a solution but could not find any answer.

Thank you!

Although Gimp 2.10 uninstalls Gimp 2.8 there are parts left behind. The Gimp 2.8 profile remains and if any third-party plugins/add-ons were added in the past to the main Gimp 2.8 installation, they will remain.

What you can try is:

1. Use the windows uninstaller to uninstall Gimp 2.10

2. If any of C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\ remains delete it.

3. Disable the Gimp 2.8 profile, rename or move out to a backup folder.

4. Now install Gimp 2.10, run it to make a default Gimp 2.10 profile.

If that does not work then consider a different Gimp 2.10 package, maybe the one from www.partha.com

Thank you. I tried that but it didn't work so I downloaded the portable version from www.partha.com. It works very well I can browse through my hard drives so I will keep using that.

Thanks a lot for the help!

I'm having the same problem. I did a clean install of Gimp 2.10 and deleted the previous 2.8 install directory before the new installation. When I click on my different hard drives and directories in the Save As dialog the only files or folders shown are in Pictures, Documents and the current User directory, all of the hard drives show blank and I cannot navigate them. It's hard to imagine that one would need to install a different package other than the official Gimp one to get something as simple as save directories to show up when trying to save. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Can't browse directories in GIMP 2.10

This is a problem with glib. You have to downgrade to 2.53.1 I had to do that when I ran into this problem with RC2.

You shouldn't think of this as a solution - downgrading glib in an installer is a temporary workaround and if a more recent version fixed any security-related issues, it is even a dangerous one. The issue is still there.

Done more than a few tries in a Win 10 VM and it looks like the last released Windows installers have this problem

These are the ones that implement 32 bit plugin compatibility

gimp-2.10.0-setup-1.exe and gimp gimp-2.10.0-setup.exe

The original gimp-2.10.0-x64-setup.exe work ok.

You could purge the Gimp 2.10 installation, delete the GIMP 2 folder and the Gimp 2.10 gimp profile and reinstall with the old installer

https://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gimp/v2.10/windows/gimp-2.10.0-x64-setup.exe

or just hang on a few days, I am sure the Windows packager will issue an update.

Can't browse directories in GIMP 2.10

Is this bug report relevant? If so, the fix might be in glib 2.56.2.

https://github.com/Alexpux/MINGW-packages/issues/3584 Since last updates gtk filechooser appears broken.

Steps:

run gedit Open -> Other documents ...
Dialog shows, try to change drive to "Label (D:)" No content to bowse

Thanks Elle! Yes, that is it.

When I rebuild to answer Ell on the other bug, I'll check out 2.56.2. In the meantime, yes, you have to downgrade to 2.53.x which is why my build doesn't exhibit this issue.

Can't browse directories in GIMP 2.10

I don´t really know what is GLIB but using the portable version from partha.com allows me to browse directories without needing to create a profile or installing/uninstalling any other thing in my computer. But I'm just a GIMP beginner.

Hopefully it will be fixed in the official GIMP installer.

Can't browse directories in GIMP 2.10

Also unable to access drives/directories with GIMP 2.10. Uninstalled.
Deleted all gimp directories in Programs. Reinstalled.

Still can not use anything else than the user directory I'm signed into windows with.

Is my only option to just abandon 2.10? Windows 10

I'm glad I saved the 2.8.20 setup file as I can't seem to find it online. I'm sure I'm not knowing where to look though.

Things don't necessarily improve after reinstalling. Especially when that is not the solution at all.

Or maybe you could wait for either newer installer of 2.10.0 or 2.10.2 whichever comes first.

Hello everyone,

I just installed GIMP 2.10 and when I try to open or save an image it doesn't allow me to browse my hard drives and the option on the top to navigate through folders is not present.

There is an update to the Windows Gimp 2.10.0 installer which seems to fix the problem (only a quick test)

gimp-2.10.0-setup-2.exe

https://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gimp/v2.10/windows/gimp-2.10.0-setup-2.exe

I was surprised at first that I couldn't find any info about that bug and thought it was my computer.

I'm happy they fixed it quick :)
