what does `colorize` do exactly?

Dear list,

Could someone explain the actual pixel-by-pixel operation GIMP performs after gray-scaling the image when colorizing? I would specifically like to know how the RGB value of a particular image is converted to a different value that is similar but not exactly the same as the chosen HSV value. Thanks!
