Gimp 2.8 erase to transparent doesn't work in Win 10

Works fine in Win 7.
Opened new with background transparent. in layers alpha to selection. imported image to layer; set alpha to selection. made selection and erased. area filled with background color.

That last part, "area filled with background color", is a telltale characteristic of not actually having an alpha channel on the image when you did the erase ... did you double-check that? Because if your steps are correct then something else must have happened along the way....

(I also run GIMP on Win 10 and have yet to find any problems.)
