GIMP WON'T OPEN

I would like to be a Gimp user but I am not one yet because despite downloading and installing Gimp three times it still won't open (uninstalling it and rebooting each time). I am using Windows 7 64bit and I understand that the download will automatically chose the correct programme. When I click the Icon, the start-up process commences and the Gimp icon appears in the Task Bar. However, it doesn't open. If I click the icon in the Task bar, nothing happens, well that isn't quite true as the icon appears to shoot across the screen diagonally to the left as though it was opening on another screen or something.

Can anyone help?

Regards Richard

Do you have another screen, or did you have one at a previous time?
