Fixed screen

Hi,

when I open Gimp, I get a fixed screen. I can see the scrollbar but it does nothing, please see here.

What can I do to fix this? Is there a preference to be changed?

I'm using Ubuntu 14.04, gimp 2.8.10 and an old Toshiba satellite 32 bit.
