a fish blowing bubbles

I created an animation of a fish blowing bubbles in gimp 2.8.14. Each set of bubbles in each frame begins to line up and form a msg. However, I can't figure out how to erase bubbles in previous layers ( as if they had't yet popped) so it creates a jumbled mess. Please help.

When you export (to .gif?) you need to choose the option to replace previous frames.
