Help with creating a decal

I am repainting a harness racing helmet for a friend of mine and I'm not sure in Gimp how exactly to create the image that I want, to be turned into a decal that I can use on the front of the helmet.

My friends initials are *C* *M* and that being said, I am trying to create and image of a horse shoe turned sideways to form the letter *C* and have an image in old west style script of the letter* M *intersecting/overlaying the *C* to form his initials. Not sure if you will understand this, but, if you do, can you guide me through the process of creating this image.

I have jpeg files for both the horseshoe and the letter *M*.as per attached.

Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
