Sharpening text inside images

I work daily with PNG files exported from magazine PDF files. They contain mostly text and some images. Some clients ask me to make the text look a bit sharper, and I'm frustrated working with sharpening tools designed for photographs. Every sharpening tutorial I've found so far is photo-based. Tips?
