Problems Actually Starting/Launching Gimp

Hello Gimp Users,

I have a Lenovo , Windows 8 laptop. I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser.

I have downloaded the gimp-2.8.14-setup-1.exe.torrent file , but when I try to run this file, I am asked which application I want to open Gimp with (EG Mozilla Firefox etc...)

Does anyone know how to get around this and how to install and run Gimp please ?

Many thanks

Adam

You need to ignore the unhelpful torrent download link and instead use the link where it says: "If the torrent download doesn't work, you can also follow this link":

http://download.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.8/windows/gimp-2.8.14-setup-1.exe

That is a link to a torrent, where the file is partially downloaded from many sources, spreading the load over those sources. Many people have no idea what a torrent is or how to implement it.

Next to the link you clicked on, at gimp.org, is a link in brackets (http) click on that and it takes you to a more regular download http://download.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.8/windows/gimp-2.8.14-setup-1.exe

However to save load on gimp.org which has limited resources, do try one of the mirror sites shown on
http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ choose closest geographically, go there and look for a download.

Which you would need to open with a Torrent client such as μTorrent. Although, as pointed out previously, you can download the actual installer directly. We just use Torrent to spread the server load evenly.

Nikon .nef Images

Hello Gimp Users,

FIrstly a big thank you to everyone who responded to my request for help regarding launching Gimp.

I have one other question please ?

Is Gimp able to open and edit raw images from a Nikon DSLR (.nef images) ?

Many thanks

Please install UFRaw.

http://ufraw.sourceforge.net

It's both a standalone application and a GIMP plugin for opening and processing raw files.

Gimp itself, no. Gimp plus the UFRaw plugin, yes.

IMHO you are better off converting your NEF into one or more high quality JPEGs in a distinct application (that gives you a lot of choices, including Nikon Capture) and do the final edits in Gimp.

While not disagreeing, yes the UFRaw plugin will convert .NEF images & that is what I use.

It works in two ways, either I run UFRaw, open the file and when I have chosen colour balance, exposure correction etc. it opens Gimp; or I open the file in GIMP, which opens UFRaw first & I then proceed much as before.

In an ideal world we would have a Gimp that processed the deeper bit depth RAW images. Without that both UFRaw and using other programs to do the conversion have the disadvantage of making the whole a two step process.

From my limited experience, I have not seen any great advantage in using programs other than the UFRaw plugin. Because I tend to use different computers at different times, I prefer just being able to install and update Gimp with UFRaw, rather than having to look after more programs.

What I would suggest though is that if you do choose to use another program, you convert the image to a suitable lossless format that Gimp will open, rather than accepting multiple Jpeg encode/decode.

Just my two pence worth, you understand

Nikon .nef Images

I agree. However, if you want to test out the experimental Gimp 2.9 which will do 16-bit (and higher) images then download Gimp from my website www.partha.com and check it out. It comes preinstalled with UFRaw, GMIC, wavelet family of plugins, etc.

Hope this helps.

I also have a Nikon DSLR and shoot in RAW. I use darktable to process the raw images and then edit the converted jpeg's in Gimp. Darktable has the advantage of editing things non-destructively, so as I advance/learn better, I can go back and redo things in a better/informed way.

Just my thoughts.

Hope is a good breakfast, but it is a bad supper.
