The mailing lists do not accept attached files. So your image did not go through. Also I think that all contributions (not only code) should likely use the gimp-dev mailing list, rather than user list. This said, for localization in particular, you may find better help by asking the GNOME localization team (since GIMP is hosted on GNOME infra): https://wiki.gnome.org/TranslationProject Don't hesitate also to ask devs on IRC.

If not, where do I find the correct ones?

For any kind of contribution, I would advise to check first the development version (maybe that's what you were doing already, but you don't say), because maybe what was wrong in the release could have been fixed since then.
If you know how to use git, you can clone our repository: https://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/:

$ git clone git://git.gnome.org/gimp

Then if you want to work on the stable branch (for GIMP 2.8.* bugfix releases), checkout the gimp-2-8 branch. Otherwise stay on master for our main development branch for the next major release. Our main po files are under po/. Some other localization files are under po-*/ (for plugins, libraries, etc.)

Furthermore, where should I place the translated files, under Ubuntu?

Well, you have to compile the po files into a mo file. But I am unsure if you can build only these files without building the whole tree. You can try though. Configure your source tree and build this way: $ ./configure --any-option --you --want $ cd po
$ make update-po
$ make

If this does not work, maybe you have to build the whole tree. In the end, you'll have a pt.gmo file. If you wanted to test it on an existing GIMP installation (provided you don't mix versions), you may copy and rename the pt.gmo as share/locale/pt/LC_MESSAGES/gimp20.mo (under the correct prefix).
Note though that it may not be wise to modify GIMP binaries installed by your package manager, if this is what you are looking at, though for localization files, this may not be too bad.

And, last but not least, how can I make that translation available for next versions?

When you get updated po files, you can make a patch with git (or just send the po file should be fine, I guess, for a first time), and make a bug report on the bugreport:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=l10n The product must be "l10n", and not GIMP, but tell this is for GIMP in the report title (and tell whether this is for GIMP 2.8 or master).

I use to be the maintainer of the Brazilian Portuguese translation for GIMP.

I had not made any work in the post 2.8 series - so if you are using GIMP from master you will see
missing work.

You are, of course, welcome to help.

The official channel for translations, which include a o workflow for revisions is to sign in
the https://l10n.gnome.org/ and the pt_BR translators list - after taht you will be able to check out
incomplete pot files from that site, and "lock" them, so there is no effort duplication.

Feel free to write me directly on this e-mail address if you have any doubts, and, please do so if you have translation suggestions that would involve the change of terms currently in use.

João, I am, in fact refering to Portuguese-Pt, pt-Pt. I'm sorry but I'm not sure if I can help you. As you know, our countries use many different terms for the same English words. But if you think so, just say and I'll send the translations for you to review and adjust, when I get them done. It would be some less work to do.

Your explanation is a lot more complete then I expected. And more complex too.

I am part of the Portuguese Gnome translation team. So I already used DamnedLies to suggest lots of stuff, and submitted it to Duarte Loreto's approval.
I use poedit to edit the files which, as you know, creates a .mo file automatically.
The problem I found is the only files I managed to locate were at 'usr/share/locale-langpack/pt/LC_MESSAGES' and none of them matches the ones I downloaded from DamnedLies.

I thought I could just copy/paste the newly created .mo files and test the translation. My mistake, huge mistake.

If not mistaken, this is possible to do as you think. I think the right location though is more likely: /usr/share/locale/pt/LC_MESSAGES/gimp20.mo Do you have this file?

You'll still have to override an existing file installed by your package (so you may want to save it before overriding). But that should work.

NOTE: actually I see in gettext manual that there is a TEXTDOMAINDIR environment variable. If I understand correctly, if you set it, gettext should search in $TEXTDOMAINDIR/LC_MESSAGES/pt/TEXTDOMAIN.mo I suggest you test this. If this works, it will be better.

All that process you suggest, that will have to be studied. Besides, if I understood well, it means some kind of overriding the team, which I don't want to do.

Do not take my word for perfect. As a developer, I am used to compile GIMP, so I proposed the way I know. I didn't know poedit would compile the po into a mo for instance (or probably I forgot. I used to use poedit years ago, but have not since). Now that I know this, you probably won't have to bother to all the building part I told about (all the `configure` and `make` commands part).

You still want to get the last files though, but you may not even have to clone the whole repository for it. Actually I guess you may just download it through the web UI:

This is like 90% of my email directions which can get rid of. :-)
