How do I insert text?

Hi everyone,

As hard as I try to follow tutorials etc, I can't see text when I try to add it to a photo.

The Help file within Gimp suggests that if I select the Text tool and click on an area of the canvas, I should see text as soon as I start typing.

The text comes up in the "Layers - Brushes" sidebar and I can see a cursor moving in the text box on the canvas, but I see no text on the canvas at all.

What am I doing wrong?

Game of GIMP

I think GIMP deserves some promotion. Thats why I implemented a "Game of GIMP". You can find it here: http://www.bilderstroeme.de/gameOfGimp. I hope you have fun and use it to promote gimp. I would like to make a version for android and iphones, too, but I don't have a developer-account. So I'm looking for someone who could be able to put such a version into the aplle store or into th google play store. Thanks,

That's quite bizarre - there is no connection between the Brushes dialog and the text tool - if you see a moving cursor on the image canvas, nothing should happen anywhere else while you type. My first impulse would be to check whether I had the current stable version of the GIMP from an "official" source - and even if so, I would reinstall it anyway just to make certain.

If you don't see the text appearing in in the image as you type, that might be because it's too small to see: The larger the image you are adding text to, the harder the letters will be to see, unless you have selected a font & size that are large enough to show up. Next time around try typing something, do Control+a to select what you typed, and increase the size via the on-canvas control box to see what happens. Worth a try anyway.
