Transforming real photo for desktop use

Hi all,

I have a nice photo of my girlfriend and I'd like to add it to my background but due to the amount of colors it's not easy to work with it on the background. What's the best way to transform real photos to use them as background?

For example, I find this a nice way: http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/teams/art.gnome.org/backgrounds/NeverBeAlone_1280x1024.jpg

Those background dark grid darkens the image and at the same time makes the image suitable for the background.

How to achieve this effect? Any other suggestions?

Cheers,
