Gimp template

I am trying to do some DVD authoring, using the Gimp as a tool to create menus and other objects required for the job. I have found a very nice intro to the subject in
http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/doc/en/DVD/index.html, where a Gimp template is presented for the purpose above. Alas, the problem is that the instructions to modify the template given in that document seem to be for Gimp 1.*, rather than Gimp 2.*. I am scanning the user manual, but if anybody with experience can give a few hints on how to proceed, that would be most appreciated.
