I was asking my self about how many gimp users are there ? I searched an answer to this question many time on the web but i didn`t find any thing about this

And you won't, because GIMP has no "phone home" feature to know exactly how many people run it.

It could be hundreds of thousands of people, or millions, or tens of millions. There's no way to know for sure, but many ways to speculate :)

1. SourceForge does show the amount of downloads per week for each file, e.g. http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-win/files/GIMP%20%2B%20GTK%2B%20%28stable%20release%29/GIMP%202.8.6/

2. We don't use SourceForge anymore, so those numbers will be increasingly misleading at people learn to get the files from gimp.org only.

it more likely range in the millions of users.

(as a side note, sourceforge is no longer used for downloading GIMP Windows binaries)

my Ubuntu PPA - https://launchpad.net/~otto-kesselgulasch/+archive/gimp - for Ubuntu and its derivates has estimated 100000 downloads for Gimp 2.8.10 as far I can trust the stats from api.launchpad.net. ;-) The supported Ubuntu distros are Precise, Quantal, Raring, Saucy and Trusty for i386 and amd64 architectures.

Precise: 90504 Quantal: 1990
Raring: 4655
Saucy: 11736
Trusty: 181

Sum: 109066

GIMP is also included with many Linux distributions (I use Mageia Linux, which includes it), making it even harder to guess.

All the "point release" of Gimp on I checked Sourceforge were downloaded from 4.5 to 7 million times. I don't know how much user overlap there is between these versions, but even assuming all users upgrade regularly that's still 5 millions possible users.

I distribute two sets of Gimp python scripts via sourceforge and the sourceforge statistics give the OS of the downloaders; on one collection there are 57% downloads from Windows and on the other 72%. Linux is a decent second (32% and 21%). OSX is far behind (2.5% (less than "unknown") and 4.5%).

Of course this is a skewed statistic: - Python support was not native on windows, so Windows may be under-represented,
- Scripts are more likely to be downloaded by less casual users. - Stats show the operating system used for the download, not the one on which th script runs (there are Android downloads....)

But it is coherent with what I see on forums (a vast majority of Windows users). So if you have a believable statistic for Windows users at 25-30% more for the other platforms.

Click on the download graph

Change the dates in the "date range" field (for instance make it start on 2013-01-01 to show its complete download history

Select two dates with a N weeks interval in the peak downloads, look up the number and divide by number of weeks.
